Thursday, June 22nd from 5:30-7:30pm, KidsVoice hosted a Career Choice Fair at the 412 Youth Zone. The objective was to give homeless and foster youth the opportunity to talk to professionals working in the field as well as introduce them to programs that can help them realize goals they hope to set and accomplish for themselves.
We invited professionals to sit at tables and discuss with youth what they do and how they got there, the training that was involved and even some of the serendipity that transpired to pull them in that direction. There was a chef, a beautician, truck drivers, nurses, and police, among others. We also invited job training programs like the Bidwell Training Center, the Pennsylvania Apprentices Coordinators Association, and CCAC. The Pittsburgh Filmmakers/Center for the Arts hosted a live graphic arts demonstration, cartooning .
Allegheny County Department of Human Services was also there to talk about their Opportunity Passport and Steel City Safe. Jeremiah’s place was handing out self-care packages (with things like laundry detergent, shampoo, toothbrushes, and deodorant) to let youth know about the services they provide for families in crisis, should they ever need them.
In addition to the opportunity to be connected with the people and programs at the tables, each youth received a free meal, a portfolio, and a raffle ticket for the chance to win some highly prized giftcards.
KidsVoice would like to thank all of the professionals and providers in attendance and especially the Lipman Youth Fund, whose funding supports our Independent Living Resource Fairs and other services for youth aging out of the traditional range of care. We had 63 youth officially check in for the event and are looking forward to our next fair which will be in the fall.
